Teachers' Day in India is celebrated on the birthday of a great philosopher and statesman, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former president of India. He was a great teacher himself. His services to education are so unique that no other country honours teachers on his birth date. When students came and asked him to join in the birthday celebration, he modestly told the students that instead of celebrating his birthday, the day would be utilized to pay homage to all teachers spread across the country.
